Rich Williams Story – Veterans Medical Recovery Support

Richard Williams Joins Forces with the Veterans Welfare Group as Chief Medical Officer to Strengthen Support for Ex-Service Personnel

A Passionate Advocate Steps Up to Help Veterans Rebuild Their Lives

The Veterans Welfare Group is proud to announce the appointment of Richard Williams as its Chief Medical Officer. As a former Royal Navy medical officer with over two decades of service, Richard brings lived experience in military healthcare, frontline medical leadership, and veteran advocacy.

Richard’s naval career saw him provide critical medical support in operational environments, including deployments with the Regional Battle Group (South) during Op HERRICK 9, 42 Commando Royal Marines, and as the Medical Officer on HMS SCOTT. His military service has given him unique insight into the healthcare challenges faced by service personnel and veterans, reinforcing the need for structured rehabilitation pathways and ongoing healthcare support.

Following his transition to civilian medicine, Richard has become a regional leader in head and neck cancer surgery, co-chairing a specialist cancer group focused on improving access to world-class treatment. His contributions to medical research and governance have been crucial in shaping national healthcare policies, and his leadership within INTEGRATE, a nationwide ENT research network, has helped advance patient care and outcomes.

With Richard’s involvement, the Veterans Welfare Group is set to further improve its impact, reaching more veterans and improving access to life-changing services. His expertise, dedication, and first-hand understanding of veterans’ needs make him a key force in ensuring that no veteran is left behind.

Richard Williams Joins the Mission to Support Veterans

Transitioning from a military career to civilian life can be one of the most complex challenges a veteran faces. Finding meaningful employment, overcoming physical injuries and rehabilitation, and navigating mental health struggles are just a few of the obstacles many ex-service members encounter. That’s why initiatives like the Veterans Welfare Group’s Armed Forces Rehabilitation Pathway are critical—and why passionate advocates like Richard Williams are stepping up to make a difference.

As Chief Medical Officer, Richard will play a key role in improving healthcare access, rehabilitation services, and long-term support for veterans.

Leveraging his expertise in medical governance, policy, and research, he aims to advocate for evidence-based improvements in veterans’ healthcare pathways.

His leadership will be instrumental in driving initiatives that provide practical support, raise awareness, and improve the quality of life for former service personnel and their families.

What is the Armed Forces Rehabilitation Pathway?

The Armed Forces Rehabilitation Pathway is a structured support programme developed by the Veterans Welfare Group to help both active and ex-service personnel overcome the often difficult transition to civilian life. By recognising the unique needs of veterans, the pathway is designed to provide comprehensive rehabilitation, career development, and community support to help them regain confidence, independence, and a new sense of purpose outside of the armed forces.

Key Aspects of the Rehabilitation Pathway

Comprehensive Physical & Mental Rehabilitation – Access to tailored medical care, physiotherapy, and psychological support.

Career Development & Training – Helping veterans gain new skills, find employment, and rebuild their careers.
