Professionals: Support Us With Our Veterans Mission
Veterans Support is not just about acknowledging their service; it’s about ensuring they have access to the resources they need to overcome the challenges caused by their time in the military. Many veterans, like Mr. William Thompson, face physical and mental health issues long after their service ends. These challenges can include tinnitus, hearing loss, mental health concerns, and difficulty adjusting to civilian life.
At Veterans Welfare Group, we are dedicated to providing veterans with the help they need. From offering personalised guidance to providing advanced medical equipment, our mission is clear: to make sure every veteran receives the support and care they deserve. We believe that no veteran should struggle alone after giving so much for their country.
In September 2024, we sponsored a veteran, Mr. Thompson, through the Veterans Hearing Trust pathway to ensure he received the necessary financial support for medical aid related to his service-acquired tinnitus. In addition to affecting his hearing, the tinnitus had broader implications for Mr Thompson’s physical and mental well-being.
Mr. Thompson’s Military Service and Struggles
Mr. William Thompson served in the Royal Armoured Corps, Light Dragoons from 2004 to 2009, proudly participating in key military operations, including Operation Herrick VII in Afghanistan. During his service, Mr Thompson showed courage and resilience, earning an Operational Service Medal for his efforts.
However, like many veterans, his years of service came at a cost. While training before deployment, Mr. Thompson sustained a serious injury that caused significant damage to his ears. Despite undergoing surgery, he was left with a high-pitched ringing, caused by tinnitus, in his left ear. Over the years, this condition only worsened, affecting his ability to live comfortably. His right ear also developed a persistent whooshing sound, alongside high-frequency hearing loss, which made even everyday conversations difficult.
The struggle extended beyond the physical symptoms. Mr. Thompson faced emotional and mental challenges due to his hearing loss, including frustration, anxiety, and the feeling of being disconnected from the world around him. For a veteran who once thrived in the field, this was a significant and difficult shift in his life.

Military-induced Hearing Loss and Its Effects on Mental Health
Hearing loss, especially when combined with tinnitus, doesn’t just impact a person’s ability to hear, it affects their emotional well-being and overall quality of life. For Mr. Thompson, the constant struggle to communicate and the overwhelming frustration of missing out on conversations began to take a toll. He described his experiences as “isolating” and “emotionally draining”, which is something many veterans experience when dealing with long-term injuries.
Mr. Thompson’s sense of frustration and anxiety due to his injuries reflects a much broader pattern seen in many veterans suffering from service-related injuries. Feeling disconnected from loved ones, unable to fully engage in social situations, and the ongoing strain of living with his condition contributed to bouts of depression and low self-esteem.
At Veterans Welfare Group, we recognise that the consequences of hearing loss go beyond their physical health. That’s why our services include not only access to advanced medical devices but also mental health support. Veterans like Mr. Thompson benefit from counselling, emotional support services, and a network of peers who understand the weight of their struggles.

The Sponsor a Veteran Programme: Mr. Thompson’s Experience
At the Veterans Welfare Group, we’re proud to sponsor veterans support via the Veterans Hearing Foundation ‘Sponsor a Veteran Programme’. This initiative allows us to connect veterans in need with advanced technology and medical resources that they might otherwise not be able to access. Mr. Thompson’s experience perfectly illustrates the life-changing impact this program can have.
Due to his complex hearing condition, Mr. Thompson required more than just basic hearing aids. Through the Sponsor a Veteran Programme, we provided him with a pair of top-of-the-line hearing aids tailored to his specific needs. These devices not only improve his ability to hear but also help manage his severe tinnitus. This advanced technology has allowed Mr. Thompson to regain some of the normalcy that had been lost due to his condition.
In addition to the hearing aids, Mr. Thompson continues to receive comprehensive aftercare, ensuring that his progress is closely monitored and any adjustments are made as needed. Through regular check-ups with a skilled independent audiologist, Mr. Thompson is receiving the long-term support he needs to thrive.
