Hearing Loss Compensation

You are able to make a claim against the armed forces through the courts in addition to the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) or War Compensation Scheme, however you must have been employed by the Armed Forces after 1987.

The difference between a claim via the AFCS is that this is a “non-fault” claim whereas via the civil courts, you’ll be claiming against fault.

High level of noise whilst working for the British Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy or Ministry of Defence can lead to hearing loss or tinnitus. If you regularly experience any these symptoms, you could be entitled to compensation due to inadequate training or not being provided with appropriate protection:

  • A high-pitched ringing in the ears.
  • Muffled or distorted hearing.
  • Difficulty hearing in situations with background noise.

Most common causes of hearing loss whilst in service include:

  • Gun and artillery fire
  • Mortars
  • Explosions
  • Pyrotechnics
  • Aircraft noise
  • Vehicle engine noise
  • Brass bands (Military bands)
